The head of the victory coalition, Haider al-Abadi, criticized the government of former Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, with the protests in October 2019.
Al-Abadi said, during a televised interview, monitored by the National News Center, that “Abdul-Mahdi’s government killed the demonstrators in cold blood,” indicating that “Tishreen martyrs were only carrying flags.”
In October 2019, demonstrations erupted in Baghdad and a number of southern governorates, interspersed with clashes and violence that led to the resignation of the Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi in November of the same year.
Al-Abadi said, “Abdul-Mahdi’s government had put the country“ in a dark tunnel, ”adding,“ Abdul-Mahdi was supposed to speak with the public directly.
Regarding the demonstrations that took place during his tenure as prime minister in 2018, Al-Abadi said: “I did not permit firing in the air at the demonstrators,” adding that “an organized party burned the Iranian consulate.”
He continued, "Terrorist groups contributed to fueling the situation in Basra."
Regarding the 2018 elections, he pointed out that “fraud was flagrant in the 2018 elections,” adding that “contesting the elections would have led to a constitutional vacuum.”
