Independent MP Alaa Al-Haidari criticized what he described as the Iraqi government’s “timid and weak negotiations” with the Turkish side regarding the water file.
Al-Haidari said, “The House of Representatives hosted in today’s session the ministers of foreign affairs, water resources, and justice to discuss the issue of water scarcity and the real problem between Turkey and Iraq,” noting that “this file has become an obsession and frightening concern for every Iraqi citizen, especially in the central and southern regions.”
He pointed out that, “In recent years, drought has begun in many Iraqi regions, particularly in the south, especially the marshes, due to the lack of allocations and water releases by Turkey under false pretexts.” Al-Haidari pointed out that “there are previous agreements between Iraq and Turkey, including the 1946 agreement called the Friendship Agreement, in addition to the 1987 agreement on organizing the release of the water share from Turkey to Iraq.”
He continued, “Unfortunately, Turkey has not adhered to international agreements, and we say it frankly and far from any abstraction that there is a timid negotiation by the Iraqi government, specifically the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Water Resources, with the Turkish side.”
Al-Haidari explained, “Iraq needs a strong and courageous negotiator with the Turkish side to obtain water entitlements and increase water releases by the Turkish side towards Iraq. In the event that Iraq’s entitlements are not achieved, there is a parliamentary consensus to exempt the relevant ministers responsible for the water file with the Turkish side.”
He pointed out that “the Ministry of Water Resources’ position on water scarcity is very weak and timid, and we need a brave and strong position and a response to Turkey by boycotting goods in order to increase water releases to Iraq.”
