    Economy News _ Baghdad
The Ministry of Agriculture implemented 65 different strategic investment projects in the sector, while preparing future investment plans for those who were stalled or lagging behind.
The Assistant Director General of the Ministry’s Agricultural Investments Department, Dr. Hussein Ismail Hussein, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” followed by “Al-Iqtisad News” that the number of strategic projects implemented in the sector during the past period was 65, between sold and leased, of which seven belong to the Ministry of Agriculture in the region. It is currently outside the control of the federal government.
He added that the remaining projects are 58, of which seven include leased land and buildings, such as Al-Khalis and Al-Diwaniyah cattle stations, while the other section includes sold projects, such as poultry fields, cow stations, and feed factories, and are distributed among all governorates, except for Al-Muthanna, which is devoid of projects.
Hussein described the investment mechanism in the sector as complex because of its relationship with the environment and nature. It also faces complex procedures from some ministries, in addition to the problem of encroachment on agricultural lands, in addition to the necessity of them being free of contracts and contractual obligations before offering them to investment to avoid tribal problems.
He pointed out that there are agricultural investment opportunities announced in all governorates of the country, in addition to the presence of other current requests to establish large stations, noting that they are in the process of implementing procedures in order to begin implementing them, while starting to invest in small poultry projects.
The Assistant Director General of the Department revealed his department’s intention to implement future investment plans for stalled and lagging projects in the sector, similar to those for full-time agricultural engineers, noting that the plans aim to achieve optimal investment of the governorates’ resources, using modern irrigation system technologies, while striving to achieve self-sufficiency in strategic crops. And exporting the surplus, in addition to expanding the horizontal production of grains, with the aim of covering the local need for them.
