Journalists await the law to "protect their rights"

Journalists are waiting for the approval of a law to protect their rights, which provides material and moral protection, protects them from the tyranny of employers, and provides security protection, in addition to the right to obtain information. It is expected that an amendment will be made to the law during the new legislative session, with the necessity of electing a speaker of parliament.
Member of the Parliamentary Culture Committee, Nour Nafeh, told Al-Sabah: “The law exists and has not been discussed, and amendments are scheduled to be made to it.” She added, “The law includes journalists’ financial and moral rights, including retirement, the right to obtain information, and security protection,” indicating that “some journalists suffer from injustice in their institutions, and the amendments will be completed during this legislative session.”
She added: "There are many laws awaiting the election of a parliament speaker, because the council's situation is critical due to political disputes that are obstructing the approval of laws."
Observers believe that the approval of the “Journalists’ Rights Protection” law is very important, expecting it to be passed easily due to the lack of any political or financial aspect in it. Writer and journalist Ali Abdul Zahra praised the law, calling on the House of Representatives to expedite its passage.
Abdul Zahra told Al-Sabah: “Preparing a draft law to protect the rights of journalists in the private sector is an important gesture, as this law represents an end to a major crisis suffered by journalists in civil institutions, which do not respect the rights of journalists and manipulate their fates, and tie them up according to their agendas exclusively, and even reduce their salaries.” He added that “in most cases, their services are terminated in a manner that does not befit their efforts, and deprives them of their rights stipulated in both the Journalists Protection Law No. (21) of 2011, and also the Labor Law No. (37) of 2015.”
Abdul Zahra called on the Council of Ministers and the Council of Representatives to expedite the legislation of the law, "especially since it concerns a large segment of Iraqi society and one of its democratic authorities."
