The Ministry of Planning reported that the survey to update the poverty line in Iraq is nearing completion.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, told Al-Sabah: The survey, which the ministry began in July of last year, is expected to end by the end of this month, so that we will have new results to update the poverty line annually in light of inflation indicators and the results of the ongoing annual surveys of the social and economic status of the family. He pointed to the preparation of a national map that highlights the geographical hotspots and pockets of poverty at the level of the smallest administrative unit and its updating, noting that the ministry is preparing to prepare a new five-year strategy 2024-2028, in addition to awaiting the results of the survey to be a vision based on realistic starting points. For his part, economic expert Dr. Ali Daadoush explained, in an interview with "Sabah", that it is important for the Ministry of Planning to complete a field survey of the poverty line, especially with the significant increase in the prices of goods, whether necessary or luxury, pointing out that many goods have been classified as luxury and have recently become necessary, and this affects the incomes of middle-income and limited-income groups, down to the poor and those without income.
He added that the government must take into account the poverty line levels in conjunction with inflation in each governorate and organize programs for these groups with the aim of rescuing them from the situation that has affected them socially and economically, stressing the need for the government to balance the financial allocations for these groups, whether sectoral, ministerial or governorate councils, to prevent duplication and achieve the desired goal of benefiting the largest number of them and preventing waste of public money.
