    Baghdad Today - Kirkuk
The leader of the Al-Fatah Alliance, Muhammad Mahdi Al-Bayati, confirmed today, Tuesday (July 23, 2024), that 200,000 people were “added” to the Kirkuk records, asking: “For whose benefit were these names added? ”
Al-Bayati said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Postponing problems does not help in solving them, but rather leads to accumulations, and solutions become difficult and complex with time. This is what has been happening in Kirkuk for many years, especially in light of the lack of a vision for consensus and the influence of national and sectarian dimensions."
He added, "Kirkuk suffers from deep problems, the most prominent of which is the population registry, as 200,000 people were added from 2003-2017 according to statistics from the Ministry of Trade. If half of them are eligible to vote, then we are facing a bloc that can win several seats in any election cycle," asking, "In whose interest were these names added?"
He pointed out that "there is also a voter registry that is a source of concern for us, and there is a decision from the federal government regarding it, and we are waiting for its implementation. There is a huge amount of demands from the three presidencies regarding voter and population files, because without conducting a comprehensive and objective review and deleting the additions, the solutions will be very difficult and complex."
The crisis in Kirkuk arose after 2003, due to the struggle for control and influence over the city, where a mixture of Sunni Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds and a Christian minority live. After the American occupation, the Kurdish parties took control of Kirkuk, a development that the Arabs and Turkmen considered an injustice against them.
Kirkuk city has strategic importance in terms of its geographical and economic location, which makes it a point of conflict between Iraqi political blocs.
The importance of Kirkuk lies in the fact that it contains important oil wells. It is the second largest Iraqi city, coming after the southern city of Basra in terms of oil wealth, in addition to its importance in terms of its distinguished geographical location, as it is located north of Baghdad, and it is a link between four Iraqi cities, which are Salah al-Din, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Nineveh.
