The list of the Arab countries that generate the most electricity in 2023 shows that Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the Emirates lead, amid an increase in their consumption, while Algeria is the only country that recorded a decline on an annual basis.
Recent data from 9 Arab countries shows that total electricity generation in the 9 Arab countries will rise to 1.26 thousand terawatt-hours in 2023, compared to 1.21 thousand terawatt-hours in 2022.
The list includes: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the Emirates, Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria, Qatar, Oman and Morocco, all of which - except Algeria - witnessed an increase in electricity generation during the past year.
It is noteworthy that Saudi Arabia was among the top 10 countries in the world in generating electricity during the past year, with a share of 1.4% of the global total, which rose to 30 thousand terawatt-hours during 2023, compared to 29.2 thousand terawatt-hours in 2022.
The Arab countries that generate the most electricity in 2023
Saudi Arabia topped the list of Arab countries that generate the most electricity during 2023, with a generation volume that rose to 422.9 terawatt-hours, compared to 401.3 terawatt-hours in 2022, i.e. an annual increase of 21.6 terawatt-hours, equivalent to 5.4%.
Egypt came in second place on the list, with electricity generation volume rising last year to 220.1 terawatt-hours, compared to 216.7 terawatt-hours in the previous year, an annual increase of 3.4 terawatt-hours, equivalent to 1.6%.
Egypt is facing higher than normal temperatures, which is increasing the demand for electricity to historic levels and putting pressure on the sector, which is 60% dependent on gas. As a result, Egypt has returned to importing liquefied gas to meet demand as local production declines.
In third place, the UAE came in, with a generation volume that rose to 165 terawatt-hours in 2023, compared to 153.3 terawatt-hours in 2022, an annual increase of 11.7 terawatt-hours (7.6%).
Iraq ranked fourth on the list of Arab countries that generated the most electricity in 2023, with an amount of 139.4 terawatt-hours, compared to 131.4 terawatt-hours in 2022, an increase of 6% on an annual basis.
Kuwait advanced in the list, coming in fifth place, with electricity generation rising to 88.3 terawatt-hours in 2023, compared to 83.5 terawatt-hours in 2022, an increase of 5.7%, as shown in the chart below:
Kuwait is witnessing a significant increase in demand for electricity due to the severe heat wave it is experiencing, which has caused power generation stations to be unable to meet demand at certain times this summer, and the country has been forced to implement a load shedding policy in some areas.
Algeria records the only relegation
Algeria's ranking dropped to sixth place on the list of Arab countries that generate the most electricity, with its production declining by 5.8% during the past year to 85.9 terawatt-hours, compared to 91.2 terawatt-hours in 2022.
Qatar came in second place in the list of Arab countries that generate the most electricity in 2023, with a volume that increased by about 8.7% to 54.4 terawatt-hours, compared to 50 terawatt-hours in the previous year.
The Sultanate of Oman came in ninth place, with electricity generation increasing by 6.4%, to 44.3 terawatt-hours during the past year, compared to 41.7 terawatt-hours in 2022.
In last place, Morocco ranked among the Arab countries with the highest electricity generation in 2023, with a volume that increased by 2.6%, to 42.2 terawatt-hours, compared to 41.2 terawatt-hours in 2022.
The following chart, prepared by the Energy Research Unit, shows the electricity generation mix in Morocco between 2021 and 2023:
The most electricity generating countries in the world
Asia is the world's largest electricity generating region, with 15.28 thousand terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2023, compared to 14.54 thousand TWh in 2022, led by China, India and Japan, according to data from the British Energy Institute.
North America was the second largest region in electricity generation, but it declined to 5.48 thousand TWh last year, compared to 5.53 thousand TWh in 2022.
The amount of electricity generated in Europe also decreased last year to 3.8 thousand terawatt-hours, compared to 3.89 thousand terawatt-hours in 2022.
At the country level, China is the largest electricity generator, with 9.45 thousand terawatt-hours, compared to 8.84 thousand terawatt-hours in 2022, i.e. an annual increase of 610 terawatt-hours, exceeding the production of both France and Germany.
In second place globally is America, despite its electricity production declining last year to 4.49 thousand terawatt-hours, compared to 4.53 thousand terawatt-hours in the previous year.
Third, India came in with a production volume that rose to 1.95 thousand terawatt-hours, compared to 1.82 thousand terawatt-hours in 2022, followed by Russia with about 1.17 terawatt-hours, compared to 1.16 terawatt-hours in the previous year.
While Japan's electricity production declined, coming in fifth place, with an amount of 1.01 thousand terawatt hours, compared to 1.04 thousand terawatt hours in 2022.
