Baghdad/Al-Masala: Corruption in Iraq is one of the most thorny and complex issues that has plagued the country for many years.
Prominent political figures acknowledge the existence of widespread and increasing corruption in various aspects of the state. MP Yasser Al-Husseini confirmed that there are clear suspicions of corruption and negligence in the work of many ministries and officials, but there is political protection that prevents these people from being held accountable and questioned in the House of Representatives. This protection comes from parties that control the governmental and parliamentary scene, which complicates matters and makes it difficult to combat corruption effectively.
Cases of negligence and suspicion in the work of ministries and officials are not limited to individuals only, but include an entire system of politically protected corruption.
Although these cases are known and diagnosed, there is intense pressure that prevents any serious action towards accountability or interrogation, which reinforces the culture of impunity and increases the spread of corruption. Some MPs are accused of covering up corruption in exchange for achieving personal interests with the corrupt, which further complicates the problem and deepens the crisis.
Iraq is ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world, ranking fifth in the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index issued by Transparency International.
This low ranking reflects the extent of corruption and its negative impact on the state and society. Although there are laws that combat corruption in most countries of the world, Iraq seems to be a special case, where corrupt people enjoy protection from both political parties and even some foreign countries that may support them.
The absence of law and the spread of what can be called the “law of the jungle” in Iraq has led to the crushing of the dignity of the real security man and the spread of corruption in the smallest details of the state.
Every corrupt person in Iraq has a “backer” in Baghdad, whether he is a minister or the head of a bloc or party.
This protection is not limited to the lower levels of government, but extends to include even the highest levels, which contributes to the deepening and spread of corruption.
The rampant corruption in Iraq is not just a superficial phenomenon, but is protected and covered by political conflicts and disputes between the various parties.
All the governments that have succeeded one another in power in Iraq initially raised slogans of fighting corruption and moved towards taking measures, but they quickly collided with the reality of “party protection” that causes those movements to become flabby and fail.
Corruption in Iraq has become a state within a state, protected by various forces that guard it and develop it day after day.
The greatest fear is that corruption will become an integral part of the public system in Iraq, complicating the chances of reform and making combating corruption an almost impossible task under the current circumstances.
