Contradictory reports on Ahmedinejad's visit to Baghdad

    7/14/2013 1:53 PM

BAGHDAD/ Aswat al-Iraq: London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily said today that "contradictory reports expected that the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will visit Iraq at the end of this week.

Iraqi media sources said to the paper that "an invitation was extended to Ahmadinejad by Iraqi vice-president Khudhair al-Khuza'I, in his capacity as Acting President of Iraq.

Iranian sources said that the visit will take place next Thursday, the paper added.

Iraqi premier's media advisor Ali al-Mussawi said he "does not know about the visit".

He added that Nejad wanted to visit Iraq, but there are protocol hindrances prevented because he should be invited by the president of the republic Talabani, who is, now, under medical treatment in Germany.

The visit of Nejad was supposed to be in December last, but the illness of Talabani prevented it.

If the visit is made, it will coincide with the UN Security Council resolution 598 which ended the Iraqi-Iranian war in 1988.
