On Tuesday, President Fuad Masum received the credentials of the Saudi ambassador to Baghdad Abdul Aziz bin Khalid al-Shammari.
On Monday, Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari received the credentials of the new Saudi ambassador to Baghdad, replacing former ambassador Thamer al-Sabhan.
"Iraq is keen to strengthen relations with the Kingdom in various fields to serve the interests of the two countries and peoples and help in the stability and peace of the region," the president of the republic said in a statement received by the Saudi ambassador. "The importance of working in the economic and security aspects, especially in the fight against terrorism," Masoum said, referring to Iraq's role with neighboring countries in protecting the region from extremist ideology and terrorist action.

In August 2016, Iraq submitted a protest note to Riyadh requesting the replacement of Ambassador Thamir al-Sbahan with another ambassador, on the backdrop of offensive remarks against the popular mob and accusing him of planning to assassinate him.
The Iraqi-Saudi relations have witnessed a remarkable improvement recently, after a series of mutual visits between the two sides, resulting in the signing of joint memorandums of understanding culminating in the establishment of the Coordinating Council.
