The construction of the Makhoul Dam will serve all the lands located in the Tigris River Basin (The Independent Arabia)
[rtl]It seems that the Iraqi government has begun to move to resume one of the most important strategic projects related to irrigation, represented by the Makhoul Dam project, which is located in the north of Salah al-Din Governorate, after work on it was suspended for more than three decades, following the invasion of Kuwait in 1990 by Iraq. And despite the passage of 18 years since The fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003, because successive governments have not been serious since that date to complete the planned project, with the aim of generating electric power and reclamation of vast lands in Salah al-Din and Kirkuk, in addition to strengthening the water in the Tigris River when it is scarce, as well as that it will reduce The burden on the Mosul Dam, which suffers from a structural problem, which requires a continuous process of filling and making it difficult to fill the dam at its full capacity.[/rtl]
[rtl]Perhaps the decrease in the water revenues of the Tigris River, due to the establishment of dozens of dams by Iran and Turkey on the river and its tributaries, and the lack of rainwater and the negative repercussions that may result, the increased need to establish dams in Iraq to be used when needed, especially as it is determined to expand agricultural lands to produce various crops. Especially since he achieved self-sufficiency in the crop of wheat and some vegetables, and his intention to grow some crops that enter into manufacturing industries.[/rtl]
[rtl]Last year, the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources worked on the approval of the Prime Minister to finance the completion of the two Makhoul Dam projects in Salah al-Din with a capacity of 3 billion cubic meters, and the Badush Dam in Nineveh Governorate with a capacity of 11 billion cubic meters, to be an alternative to the Mosul Dam in the event of a sudden collapse, but the financial allocations It was an obstacle to the implementation of the project at the time, in the hope that financial allocations would be placed within the budgets of Iraq to complete the construction of the dam, to be built within three years.[/rtl]
[rtl]Commencement of work within days[/rtl]
[rtl]Perhaps the ministry’s move came after the Ministry of Planning gave the green light to resume work on the Makhoul Dam, and allocated sums within the 2021 budget approved by Parliament on the first of April (April) to the Ministry of Water Resources to start implementing it, and announced the imminent resumption of work on it during the coming days within a period of time up to To three years, and with a storage capacity of 3 billion cubic meters.[/rtl]
[rtl]A spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, said, "Funds have been allocated to build the Makhoul Dam within the 2021 budget, and we are awaiting approval so that the project will start in the coming days, such as a dam for storing water and generating electricity on the Tigris River south of the Badush Dam coming from the Upper Zab River." He points out that "there was controversy for many years regarding the safety of the foundations, but we will have measures to treat the gypsum soil that may be under the foundations and before the construction of the dam, so that what happened in the Mosul dam will not be repeated."[/rtl]
[rtl]Investigations of the foundations and the extent of damages[/rtl]
[rtl]He explained that it is planned that the storage capacity of the dam will be 3 billion cubic meters, but that there are some problems that must be solved before the construction of the dam begins, related to the residents of the lake basin on which it will be built.[/rtl]
[rtl]The government allocated construction funds and drew up an annual budget, but the amount of those funds was not known, according to Diab. He pointed out that an investigation will be conducted on the foundations before the construction of the dam and the extent of the damages to remove them.[/rtl]

[rtl]Diab adds, "15 percent of the work of the dam's foundations has been completed. However, Iraq's entry into Kuwait in 1990 halted work on the project that was started before that date, which now requires removing the damages resulting from leaving the dam during this long period." "The ministry's companies will undertake the process of completing the earthworks. As for the electric power plant and other works, they need specialized companies."[/rtl]
[rtl]The site of the dam and the boundaries of its construction extends from the "Zawiya" district north of Baiji district, in the Salah al-Din governorate, to the Yasser al-Sharqat district and large parts of the Abbasi and Lower Zab suburbs of the Hawija district southwest of Kirkuk.[/rtl]
[rtl]A service for agricultural lands in the Tigris basin[/rtl]
[rtl]For his part, President of the Union of Agricultural Associations Haider Abdel-Wahid explained, "The construction of the dam will serve all the lands located in the Tigris River basin and its percentage is estimated at 70 percent of the total reclaimed agricultural land in Iraq, considering that the construction of the dam is a good step in increasing the volume of reclaimed land, and it will work on Reducing the risk of future flooding. " He added, "This is the first time in decades that a storage space will be added to the Iraqi dams, as the dam will be built on the Tigris River, and it will store the amounts of falling rain, ward off the danger of torrents and preserve the water emanating from Turkey in times of floods." He indicates that this dam will increase the water storage of Iraq for use in times of water shortage, as well as contribute to reducing the waste process by storing the surplus instead of going to the sea. "[/rtl]
[rtl]He confirms that the governorates that will benefit from the project are all agricultural lands located on the Tigris River basin, whether in Salah al-Din or in Baghdad, Maysan, Central and Basra, pointing out that there is no large water reservoir after the Mosul Dam, and there are small reservoirs.[/rtl]
[rtl]There are more than 20 dams and water reservoirs in Iraq, most of which were built before 2003, namely, Dokan, Darbandikhan, Al-Azim, Hamrin, Al-Ramadi, Fallujah, Mosul, Samarra, Al-Kut, Al-Wand, Dohuk, Debs, Diyala, Al-Shamiya, Kufa, Haditha, Fallujah, Habbaniyah, Razzazah, and Tharthar.[/rtl]
