A few days ago, a spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources, Ali Radi, revealed that the rate of water storage in Iraq is 12% of the general storage rate, which is the first indication of the quantities of strategic water reserves in Iraq that the Ministry of Water Resources has always maintained.
Radi said in press statements that “the ministry is focusing on the water file and the file of negotiations with the upstream countries, and that this file has witnessed during the past days and will also witness in the coming days, the opening of new pages for negotiations with the neighboring countries of Iraq, namely Turkey, Iran and Syria, in order to exchange information and continue meetings. Technical and joint visits.
Radi, pointed out that “the water storage decreased by a percentage not witnessed by the historical record of Iraq for the past period at all,” noting that “the water storage rate today is 12 percent of the general storage rate, which prompted the ministry to adopt a plan for water releases from dams and reservoirs to secure all requirements.” The shortage is filled by the lack of water revenues from the upstream countries.
According to special calculations conducted by it, the total storage capacity of water in Iraq is approximately 130 billion cubic metres, so 12% means that Iraq does not now have more than 16 billion cubic meters of strategic storage.
This quantity is sufficient for consumption within one year only, as it represents, in addition to Iraq's revenues of less than 20 billion cubic meters annually, less than the consumption need of Iraq by about 40% in normal times, which amounts to 57 billion cubic meters.
While the storage alone, amounting to 16 billion cubic meters, represents about 28% of the total need, which is less than the assumed need by more than 70%.
