Political analyst: There is a unifying desire among most of the Iraqi parties to clear up the crises

Baghdad: A negotiating delegation from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq visited, during the past week, the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, with the aim of finding solutions to thorny files and issues between the two parties. The most prominent of these files is the management of what is known as the "disputed areas", the most important of which is Kirkuk, along with the oil and gas file, the salaries of the region's employees and the management of airports and land ports with neighboring countries, which Baghdad considers a sovereign file of its specialization according to the constitution. This comes at a time when the region is experiencing an internal political crisis between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, amid the latter's threat to withdraw its officials from the regional government. To learn more about these negotiations, The Majalla interviewed political analyst Ali Al-Baydar.
Q: In your opinion, will the negotiations between the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq and the central government be successful?
– This move comes within the framework of increasing political awareness in the country and a unifying desire of most parties to zero crises, so the program that relates to imposing a new reality entitled addressing the failures of the past was among the ministerial curriculum of the government of President Muhammad Shia’a al-Sudani, especially with regard to ending the dispute between the center and the region. . The main axes of disagreement that the delegation focused on, whether they centered on the border areas, the oil file, or the salaries of employees in the region, did not meet with major objections, as was the case previously. Political philosophy has come to see the necessity of ending those disputes in which there will be no victor or vanquished, whether in favor of the region or the center. The region is part of the country, and the political mentality has come to see things from a different perspective.
* The promises that the Kurdish forces received are not new, so what are the factors that might help to implement them this time?
The political scene has reached the point of explosion due to the many crises, and it can no longer bear much. In the past, the mentality of the collective authority viewed these issues on the basis that they were partisan interests. We must not involve the Iraqi citizen, whether he is in the Kurdistan region, in the disputed areas, or in the rest of the Iraqi regions, in the political crises and make him part of the crisis. It is not a favor from the central government or the regional government, and their salary file must be removed from the crisis.
* How can the political dispute between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan be reflected in these negotiations?
– Even if there is a difference in views between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, but what unites the Kurdish parties in general is more than what separates them. Any of the parties is a weakness for the claimants of the rights of the region, so some crises can occur, but they will be forgotten in the negotiations with Baghdad.
* In the event that Al-Sudani does not abide by these promises, can the Kurdish forces turn to oppose the current government?
– I think it is difficult for those who are accustomed to being in the system of power to go to the opposition as the Sadrist movement did, because the social consciousness in the country looks at the power more than it looks at the opposition forces and explains the work
Politics is seen as synonymous with power without going to the category of opposition, which may be more useful if society has a great political awareness.
