The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has begun preparing the national policy for occupational health and safety in the agricultural sector.
The person in charge of the tasks of the Director General of the National Center for Occupational Health and Safety in the Ministry, Mashreq Abdul Khaleq, told Al-Sabah: A special working group has been formed to prepare the national policy for occupational health and safety in the agricultural sector after the Republic of Iraq joined the Agreement on Safety and Health in Agriculture No. 184 of 2001.
He added that the policy will be prepared in cooperation with the International Labor Organization and relevant government agencies in order to provide services to the workers segment by holding training courses and educational seminars for them.
Abdel-Khaleq pointed out that the National Center for Occupational Health and Safety coordinated with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers to activate the national policy for occupational health and safety and to adopt the regulatory mechanism in the national policy to overcome the challenges facing the center in order to improve the status of workers.
And he indicated that the center is currently working on finding ways of joint cooperation with federations, unions and civil society organizations to spread the culture of occupational health and safety among workers, especially since the center records hundreds of injuries every month as a result of the lack of safety elements in the work environment and the exposure of workers' lives to the risks of injuries and accidents.
He added that the ministry is studying the possibility of holding a specialized conference to reduce accidents and work injuries in order to create favorable conditions for a healthy and sound work environment in the private and public sectors and investment projects.
