Baghdad announces a financial reward for information on the burial place of missing Iraqis and Kuwaitis

Today, Sunday, the Iraqi authorities in the capital, Baghdad, announced the allocation of a financial reward, the value of which has not been specified, for any meaningful information that would enable them to locate the burial place of the missing Iraqis and Kuwaitis, following the 1991 Gulf War.
Today, Sunday, a joint statement of the Iraqi Ministries of Defense and Interior called on all those who have information about the burial sites of missing persons inside Iraqi or Kuwaiti territory during the war to submit it, announcing that a financial reward will be allocated for “useful information that we have reached positive results on the ground, through communication.” With Iraqi embassies and consulates abroad, or by calling the hotline number and e-mail of the Directorate of Human Rights in the Ministry of Defense.
The statement also published the phone numbers of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Red Cross mission in Baghdad, and the phone numbers of the Kuwaiti embassy and its consulates in Basra and Erbil.
Iraq is seeking to close the file of the effects of the invasion of the State of Kuwait, to completely get out of the international sanctions that were imposed on it afterwards, including knowing the fate of the war victims among the Kuwaitis who have been missing so far, as well as lost items, especially the archives and documents that were lost from Kuwaiti institutions and departments.
The file of the missing as a result of the Gulf War is still the focus of attention of the two neighboring countries, and according to previous figures of the Red Cross, only 215 Kuwaitis and 85 Iraqis were found, in different places, mostly in southern Iraq, amid the absence of information about the fate of large numbers estimated at thousands.
In August 2019, Iraq handed over the remains of a number of victims of the Second Gulf War 1991 to Kuwait, where the remains were officially handed over between the two countries, but until now the lists of missing persons, especially from Kuwaitis, still prevent the file from being closed.
In 2021, Baghdad ended the full payment of compensation in favor of Kuwait, amounting to more than $52 billion, more than 30 years after the second Gulf War.
In this context, human rights activist in Basra Governorate, Kamal Al-Eidani, told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed today, Sunday, that “this appeal made by the Iraqi authorities regarding the search for any lead leading to the burial place of the missing victims is the third of its kind this year, after an appeal I launched a similar one last May.
Al-Eidani added, in a phone call, that "the file represents a moral and humanitarian issue for both countries, and the Iraqi calls are sincere and willing to close the file completely."
He pointed out that “Basra Governorate, as it is a border with Kuwait and most of the events of the Gulf War were in it, the focus is on it more than the rest of the Iraqi governorates, and we see from time to time Iraqi research teams in this regard, and we really hope that these calls will achieve their goal.”
