Since the beginning of his term on December 20, 2021, US President Joe Biden has emphasized rebuilding the alliances and partnerships of the United States that were damaged by the policy of his predecessor, Donald Trump, after he caused great damage to the alliances of the United States and its allies when he demanded that they pay the bill for the defense services provided by the United States. President Biden has often repeated that he will work to revitalize and modernize the United States’ alliances and partnerships around the world, and this means moving to rebuild and activate old alliances on the one hand and build new partnerships on the other hand.
In light of the visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani to the United States, questions appeared on social media sites such as: What is the benefit of an alliance with the United States? Do we need the United States? Do we need to continue working on the principles of the Strategic Framework Agreement signed between the two countries in 2008 under the first government of Nouri al-Maliki?
I am not exaggerating when I say that the strategic partnership between our country and the United States, within the framework of the Strategic Framework Agreement, will regulate diplomatic and strategic relations and will contribute to achieving the interests of the two countries at all levels and respecting the sovereignty and independence of Iraq. In fact, we urgently need the expertise of the United States in all aspects of economics and technology. For example, but not limited to our real need for the Americans to produce gas, which Iraq loses annually by burning two and a half billion dollars. Not only that, our country is in great need to benefit from American companies specialized in the field of electrical energy to produce thirty thousand megawatts. We have more than fifty thousand factories whose production was halted after the fall of the idol since 2003, and we are in dire need to restart them and contain the unemployment that our youth are experiencing. We can achieve this only by providing a climate of promising opportunities through which major companies in the United States can contribute to major strategic development projects in Iraq, whether in the path of development or otherwise, especially in the fields of renewable energy and digital technology, and basic federal projects in the fields of transportation, communications, and agriculture. And investing in natural resources and important aspects of the manufacturing industry, in addition to benefiting from higher education opportunities, obtaining study seats in American universities, and accepting scholarships for studies that benefit us in the development and development of the Iraqi economy.
The success of Mr. Sudanese in activating the economic aspect of the Strategic Framework Agreement is a remarkable success for Iraq. Because it will contribute to building a direct economic foundation for the relationship between our country and the United States and will give Iraq productive investment opportunities with a first priority that precedes other priorities, including establishing banking relations between the two countries that support financing relations between the two countries.
The signs of Al-Sudani’s visit, I believe, will inaugurate a new phase in Iraqi-American relations, especially since Al-Sudani succeeded, after a year and a half of his government, in convincing the Americans that he is an Iraqi figure who can be understood.
