The head of the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party, Muhammad al-Hajj Mahmoud, on Saturday, strongly criticized the agreement concluded between Iraq and Turkey regarding military and security coordination between the two sides, describing it as “done at the expense of striking the Kurds.”
This came in a speech he gave during his participation today in the “Gul Khana” Forum under the slogan “Strategy and National Discourse in the Kurdish Regions Outside the Administration of the Kurdistan Region, which are known as the disputed areas between Erbil and Baghdad.”
Hajj Mahmoud, known in Kurdish circles as “Kaka Hama,” said in his speech during the forum that the Kurdistan Region was bombed three times yesterday, Friday, and in the district of “Sayyid Sadiq,” a number of victims fell, which means that what is happening in the region is a preparation for war.
Kaka Hama touched on the agreement concluded between Ankara and Baghdad, and said: This agreement was concluded at the expense of striking the Kurds, and the political forces in the Kurdistan Region should meet with each other instead of neighboring countries.
He added that everyone is preparing for an unwanted war that is about to break out in the region, and the Kurds should not get involved in a war that they do not want.
On August 15, the Turkish government signed what was widely hailed as a historic security and military cooperation agreement with Baghdad, which is supposed to deal a major blow to the PKK’s presence in Iraq.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan declared the agreement to be of “historic importance” when he announced it with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein in Ankara last week. Hussein said it was “a first in the history of Iraq and Turkey” in this regard.
However, Turkey later confirmed that the memorandum of understanding in the fields of military and security cooperation and combating terrorism signed with Iraq does not include any text related to ending the presence of Turkish forces on Iraqi territory.
The Anti-Disinformation Center, affiliated with the Communications Department of the Turkish Presidency, denied what was reported by the media that the memorandum of understanding, signed by the Turkish and Iraqi Defense Ministers, Yasar Guler and Thabet Mohammed Al-Abbasi, aims to end the presence of Turkish military forces on Iraqi territory.
