(AFP) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's voice on Monday said President Donald Rumsfeld's administration plan for peace in the Middle East could eventually be rejected.
During a closed-door meeting with leaders of major American Jewish organizations, Pompeo said the proposed settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict "may be rejected. One might say that it is good and nine other bad things."
"There are no guarantees that we will be able to resolve the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis," Pompeo said.
"The question is, will we have enough room to have a real debate on how to get this plan out?"
"It can be said that the plan is not viable and may not gain momentum," he said.
Pompeo also pointed out that the plan was repeatedly delayed. "It took us a long time to put forward our plan more than I thought at the beginning," he said, noting that it would be preferred by the Israeli side.
"I understand why some people think that this agreement can only appeal to the Israelis," he said. "I understand that, and I hope everyone gives space to listen and let the subject get better."
On the Bahrain Economic Conference to be held at the end of this month, Pompeo said that if Kuwait agreed to attend, all the Gulf countries would attend - or at least listen -.
"It is difficult for the Gulf states to express their full support before they are informed of the full text of the initiative," he said.
It is noteworthy that the US administration's plan for peace in the Middle East, known as the media of the "Deal of the Century", although it has not been officially announced, many of the details leaked over the past months through Arab and Western media.
The plan will be comprehensive and exceed the frameworks set by the previous US administrations, and will address all major issues including Jerusalem, borders and refugees, and be supported by funds from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.
The Middle East A website revealed what it said were details obtained exclusively for the content of the plan, including the establishment of a Palestinian state, including the territory of the Gaza Strip and areas "A" and "B" and parts of Area "C" in the West Bank.
Under the plan, donors will provide 10 billion dollars to build a state whose infrastructure will include an airport and a port in Gaza, housing, agricultural projects, industrial zones and new cities.
It also includes the postponement of the status of Jerusalem and the issue of the return of refugees to subsequent negotiations, with final negotiations to include regional peace talks between Israel and the Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia.
