A review of the post - Abdul - Mahdi era accelerating the impact of hot events
2019/12/02 23:54:49
Politicians in Iraq have begun a round of negotiations in the hope of reaching an agreement on the formation of a new government, while protests continue against the existing authority and Iranian influence in it, with a demand to change the entire political class.
Even before parliament formally approved the resignation of Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi and his cabinet on Sunday, political parties began holding "continuous meetings" to discuss the next phase of the country, a senior political source said. According to the afp
, the paralyzed parliament is the longest in modern Iraqi history, to reach an agreement to form a government that ensures the balance of power and the consent of all political parties.
As for Iran's powerful neighbor in Iraq, it "will not give up easily," said Harith Hassan, an Iraq analyst.
In contrast, Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, has pushed for a no-confidence vote from Adel Abdul Mahdi, and the international community has condemned the repression of protests and left more than 420 dead, as well as street pressure.
In addition, a government source said that General Qasim Soleimani, commander of the Qods Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and official in charge of Iraq file is visiting the latter to hold talks on the political crisis in the country.

"Demonstrations are stronger than foreign intervention"
After nearly two months of the first spontaneous protests in Baghdad and southern Iraqi cities, the country's political leaders were convinced that "demonstrations are stronger than foreign interference."
Demonstrators, who still control the demonstration grounds, from job opportunities and public services, have stepped up demands for a comprehensive overhaul of the political system set up by the United States after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.
Changing the political class accused of corruption and evaporating is equivalent to twice the GDP of Iraq. Among the richest countries in the world, oil is a prerequisite for the protesters, who today repeat in all cities their refusal to remain the current "corrupt" and "all politicians".
The Alliance, the largest political bloc in parliament backed by leading Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, and the Alliance, led by former prime minister Haider al-Abadi, stood by the protesters by refusing to participate in the current negotiations.
"They know the ceiling is too high and it is difficult for them to please the street," Hassan said.
"They don't want to face more anger and rejection," he said, while the political class that has controlled the country's fortunes for 16 years has not changed and "doesn't realize how to get rid of its traditional ways of thinking."

Short transitional period
Hassan stressed that "the best scenario (now) is the formation of a transitional government that establishes a new legislative framework for the upcoming elections." The analyst believes that the leadership "does not need to be an expert in politics, but can lead this task, and certainly make a promise not to run in the elections."
A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed his support, noting that the "transitional period should not last more than six months."
Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi said on Monday the parliament was working on a new electoral law aimed at "restoring confidence in the political and electoral process."
In this context, he began consultations with the heads of parliamentary blocs and the United Nations representatives in Iraq.
In the meantime, protesters continue to assert their demands in Baghdad and other cities in the south of the country, including Hilla and Kut, and Najaf holy to Shiites, which has been in great tension since the burning of the Iranian consulate on Wednesday evening.
Protesters say the country's problems require radical solutions that go beyond Abdul Mahdi's resignation.

Clashes
continued Sunday night at the grave of Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim, a prominent Shiite man, hundreds of meters from the demonstration square in central Najaf, and gunmen in civilian clothes shot at demonstrators.
Tribal leaders intervened on Monday morning to stop the clashes, but were unable to reach an agreement.
In Nasiriyah, the capital of Dhi Qar province, where Abdul Mahdi hails from, violence that erupted after the arrival of troops from Baghdad quickly withdrew from the city.
Protesters are still gathering in the center of Nasiriyah, demanding the "departure of the political system", which they accuse of corruption and failure to introduce reforms to improve the conditions of their city.
Human Rights Watch accused the Iraqi authorities of "allowing armed groups to kidnap people," calling on them to "take firm action" to prevent this.
