    Baghdad - IQ

Unusually every year, the markets and commercial centers in Iraq are almost empty of shoppers, for several days, "except for the well-to-do", as the popular markets are usually crowded with the arrival of the Ramadan season, with those who are shopping.

Baghdad's capital markets witnessed a state of economic stagnation, and the low turnout of citizens to shopping before Ramadan, and in this context, Hussam Al-Marsoumi, a foodstuff seller in the Shorja wholesale market in the center of the capital, said that "the sale movement in the market has become almost idle," indicating that "The sales movement was limited to the well-to-do, to buy basic necessities such as rice, pulses, and some basic materials at the Iraqi tables."

Speaking in a press investigation conducted by Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper, he explained that the proportion of shoppers this year has decreased significantly from previous years, attributing that to the frightening increase in the number of Corona infections, the deterioration of the economic situation of most Iraqis and the decline in their purchasing power, as well as the “obscene rise In prices as a result of the high exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar . "

For his part, citizen Mustafa Ahmed said, "The prices of goods, especially foodstuffs, increased by more than 30% after the increase in the dollar exchange rate," adding that "the obscene high prices are borne by the government because of its wrong monetary policy and its lack of control over the market and allowing traders to manipulate prices."

In the context, Hadeel Al-Nuaimi said, "Ramadan this year looks different from it in previous years, as citizens enter the market and leave with empty hands ."

In order to reduce the exorbitant price tag in the Iraqi market prior to the month of Ramadan, the Iraqi government took a number of measures to prevent high prices and monopolize foodstuffs. The first of these measures, according to the Ministry of Interior, was the deployment of security detachments to monitor the market and hold accountable merchants who monopolize foodstuffs.

Some basic food and consumer prices have risen by 30%, although the increase in the dollar’s exchange rate is only 18%, according to the Parliament's Finance Committee.https://www.iqiraq.news/economy/16820--.html
