Iraq expresses satisfaction with the Iranian-Saudi talks in Baghdad
Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein expressed his country's satisfaction with the Saudi-Iranian talks that take place in the capital, Baghdad, from time to time at a low level of representation, while affirming his country's readiness to continue facilitating those talks.
This came during a phone call made by Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian, with his Iraqi counterpart, according to a statement seen by Shafak News Agency, during which they discussed issues of common interest and the regional, international and security situations in the region and their repercussions on all parties.
According to the statement, Al-Lahyan touched on the reality of US-Iranian relations and clarified the current Iranian position on the Vienna negotiations, especially after the International Atomic Energy Agency's decision to monitor the Iranian project in this context.
For his part, Hussein affirmed the Iraqi government's intention to "continue to facilitate direct talks between the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran, in Baghdad, and to restore relations between them to their normal state."
He stressed the importance of "strengthening stability and introducing opportunities and mechanisms for coordination, especially since Iraq follows the principle of de-escalation and the consequent interests of all parties, and what is reflected on security and peace in Iraq's neighborhood and the region."
According to the statement, the Iranian foreign minister described the latest round of negotiations with Saudi Arabia, which took place in Baghdad, as "positive", welcoming at the same time the "implementation of the results of the negotiations between the two sides."
Abdullahian praised "the role played by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this context, and praised the Iraqi government's measures in facilitating dialogue to send Iranian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj this year."
Saudi Arabia and Iran held five rounds of talks in Baghdad, under the direct sponsorship of the government of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, who took place at the level of security officials and diplomats, the first of which was in April 2021.
