Iraqi and Russian foreign ministers
Fuad Hussein, the Iraqi foreign minister, said on Monday that Iraq will discuss with Washington this week how to pay dues to Russian energy companies despite the sanctions.
He added, during a press conference with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Baghdad, "We will address this problem with the American side, because there are sanctions, and these sanctions should not be imposed on the Iraqi side, because dealing with Russian companies continues, and Russian companies are effective in Iraq."
It is believed that Russian investments in Iraq exceed $10 billion, mostly in the energy sector. Hussein said that one of the main issues he discussed with Lavrov was how to pay the bills of Russian energy companies such as Lukoil and Gazprom operating in Iraq, even though Moscow is under international sanctions.
He added that the goal is “to protect Iraqi banks and the central bank from sanctions.”
Official sources said that the Iraqi foreign minister is expected to travel to the United States on Wednesday to discuss the new sanctions rules imposed by the US Federal Reserve in New York on international dollar transactions conducted by Iraqi commercial banks and their impact on the Iraqi economy.
The West, which was previously Russia's main energy market, imposed sanctions targeting Moscow's energy revenues because of the Russia-Ukraine war that also impeded sales to third parties, and those sanctions are expected to be tightened.
Hussein indicated during the joint press conference with Lavrov that Iraq calls for peaceful solutions and urges dialogue between Russia and Ukraine to end the war.
