    Baghdad - AFP
The Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Audrey Azoulay, is visiting Iraq for three days, starting from Baghdad on Monday, during which she will visit several workshops to rehabilitate archaeological sites, and discuss with officials the issue of support in the field of culture and education.
As part of her first visit to Iraq, Azoulay will meet, on Monday, in the Iraqi capital, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani.
"This visit is dedicated to the reconstruction of Iraq and UNESCO's investment in reconstruction," a UNESCO spokesman told AFP.
Azoulay will visit the National Museum in Baghdad on Monday, as well as take a tour of the old city in the capital, and Al-Mutanabbi Street, which is famous for its libraries.
The spokesman added, "There are ideas being studied by the Iraqi authorities on how to preserve this heritage. The idea is to see how UNESCO can help shed light on this cultural life and open the way for it to continue developing."
Iraq includes six archaeological sites included in the world heritage, and it is the cradle of the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian civilizations, from which writing began and the first cities emerged.
Iraq suffered from looting and smuggling of its antiquities after the American invasion in 2003, and then the terrorist organization ISIS over large areas of the country.
The Iraq Museum was not immune to looting in 2003 amid the chaos that followed the US invasion.
During her Monday visit to the museum, Azoulay intends to "congratulate" the museum staff who have been working since 2003 to return the artifacts, and the spokesman said: "During twenty years, they have done a tremendous job to recover the scattered Iraqi antiquities."
On Tuesday, Azoulay will visit Mosul to inspect the rehabilitation workshops of archaeological sites that her foundation is carrying out in this large city in northern Iraq, which was a stronghold of the terrorist organization and was severely damaged by fierce battles.
The official will land on Wednesday in Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan region. Where the ancient Erbil Citadel, which is classified as a world heritage site, is located.
