Chinese report: Halfaya is a giant oil field and will help promote Iraq's development

A report by the Chinese newspaper (People's Daily) dealt with the role played by the Halfaya oil field in Maysan province in promoting economic development in Iraq, noting that one of the seven giant fields in the country has an annual production capacity of 20 million tons.
The report, which was translated by (Al-Mada), stated that "the Halfaya field is the largest project managed by the Chinese (Petrogyna) company, and plays a vital role in continuing Iraq's exports of crude oil."
Haider al-Rubaie, head of the Iraqi-Chinese Friendship Association, said, "Iraqi-Chinese cooperation in the field of energy constitutes an important part of joint cooperation to implement the Belt and Road Initiative."
Al-Rubaie added, "Projects undertaken by Chinese investments have made positive contributions to the recovery of Iraq's economy and its development of living."
The report indicated that “the Halfaya oil field was discovered in 1976, however, it was not exploited and benefited from by the Iraqi government due to complex geological conditions and other reasons until the arrival of the (Chinese Petrogyna) company, in cooperation with local and international energy companies. It won the contract for the Halfaya field development project in the second licensing round organized by Iraq in 2009.
For his part, the director of the (Petrogyna) company in the Halfaya Fang Jiazong field said, "The field contains different components of carbon energy reserves and contains several different characteristics and contains multiple types of rocks and fuel."
Jiazong added, "Several Chinese investment and research companies have launched joint research campaigns to find innovations in theory and practice to ensure success in the extraction process."
Jiazong pointed out, "The extensive spread of several oil wells in a specific area within the Halfaya oil field is a good example of such innovations."
Jiazong explained, "The oil wells extend for several thousand meters underground in the form of horizontal or vertical or both, and therefore efforts must be made to ensure that these oil wells are far from any common overlap and complement each other in the process of exploration and extraction."
And Jiazong added, "Such three dimensions of the oil well represent an existing technological challenge that the Chinese company's capabilities are successfully overcoming."
"Iraq is in dire need of investment in the oil and gas industry," said an official at the Iraqi Ministry of Trade, Anwar al-Bahadli.
Al-Bahadli added, "China has promoted local development in building the Halfaya oil field," adding that "Iraqi-Chinese cooperation in the field of energy permeates broad prospects."
Al-Bahadli stressed, "The Belt and Road projects have achieved tangible benefits for the host countries and regional countries, and Iraq must expand in this field to achieve rapid development to keep pace with the challenges it faces."
The report expected, “The completion of the mechanical side of the natural gas processing plant and its manufacture in the Halfaya oil field during the month of September, and that it will enter into operation before the end of this year.”
And he talked about, "90% of the construction process has been completed to date, including cooling towers, cleaning towers, and storage tanks."
The report stated that "huge quantities of natural gas are generated during the oil extraction process," adding, "This associated natural gas is often burned in Iraq, because the process of manufacturing and collecting it requires investments in huge amounts and requires a long time to complete, and is in itself a technical challenge."
He pointed out, "Burning gas is not only a waste of natural resources, but that burning it also causes severe pollution in the environment, and for this reason, the establishment of a plant for the manufacture and collection of gas in the Halfaya field is attracting wide interest in Iraq."
The report pointed out, "The station, after it enters into operation and operation, will be the first huge project for the manufacture and collection of associated gas in Iraq."
He expected that “this station will reduce the amount of toxic gas emissions by 30,000 tons, and that the amount of liquid gas that it will generate annually is sufficient to generate 5 billion kilowatts of electrical energy, which is sufficient to supply 4 million homes with electricity.”
Oil Minister Hayan Abdel-Ghani expressed his hope that "the project will be completed soon and that it will work to bridge the shortfall in local electrical energy as soon as possible."
The report added, “The Chinese company (Petrogyna) had launched a series of training programs for local university students to support job creation and develop the skills of the Iraqi local cadre. It is noteworthy that many of the trainees have become department supervisors and project managers.
"When I joined the company for the first time, the site was a barren land, but now trees and elegant buildings cover the site," said Ali Nasser Al-Lami, Operations Manager in the Human Resources Department at the Halfaya oil field.
Al-Lami continued, "There is even a small airport on the site," noting that "the company's employees come from dozens of countries, and the company provides us with a place to develop our capabilities through the exchange of experiences."
Al-Lami added, "The company provided job opportunities for more than 1,600 Iraqi employees, and they constitute 80% of the total workforce in the Halfaya field."
