On Monday, the Central Investigation Court in the Rusafa side of Baghdad announced the arrest of the largest gang that counterfeited many real estate properties in the capital.
The media center of the Supreme Judicial Council stated, in a statement received by Al-Eqtisad News, that “after presenting news of the existence of a gang that is forging real estate belonging to the state and citizens in Baghdad, and after judicial decisions were taken by the Central Investigation Court in Rusafa, the arrest of the accused took place.”
He added, "The main members of the gang consist of 17 defendants, including 6 employees in the real estate registration departments in (Al-Karkh 1st, 2nd, and Abu Ghraib). Many forged documents were also seized, as were tools used by the defendants in forgery operations."
He continued, "Through the detailed confessions provided by the defendants, the forgery of approximately more than 100 properties was revealed, the largest portion of which is owned by the state (Baghdad Municipality and the Ministry of Finance), and the other portion is owned by citizens located outside the country within the real estate registration departments in Karkh First and Second and Abu Ghraib."
He stated that the defendants tampered with the real estate registration records of the above-mentioned departments and transferred ownership of the properties to people who were members of their gang and then sold them to other citizens for large sums of money, noting that “the court opened an investigative case against them with the aim of recovering them in accordance with the provisions of Article (36) of the Anti-Money Laundering Law.” And Terrorist Financing No. 39 of 2015, and a seizure has been placed on their money to prevent them from smuggling it or disposing of it. Their money is being tracked and seized by the Rusafa Investigation Court, which specializes in integrity and money laundering issues.”
The statement indicated, "tampering with dozens of real estates has been stopped, and forgery of other real estate operations is being investigated, and the implementation of arrest warrants issued against the fugitive defendants, who number more than (60) defendants, is being followed up."
