    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (July 18, 2024), the representative of the Fatah Alliance, Mukhtar al-Moussawi, expected that the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives would not be decided at the beginning of the sessions of the new legislative term.
Al-Moussawi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The differences are still ongoing regarding the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and this means that it is not possible to decide on the election of the president at the beginning of the sessions of the new legislative term, as this file cannot be decided without an agreement and consensus between all the blocs and parties."
He added, "What is obstructing the election of the Speaker of Parliament is the Sunni-Sunni conflict. There is difficulty in the Sunni forces agreeing on one candidate or a compromise candidate, or even entering with two candidates and respecting what the representatives will elect. Therefore, we expect that there will be no imminent solutions to the crisis."
On May 18, the House of Representatives failed to elect a new speaker, after failing to hold a "decisive" third round to tip the scales in favor of one of the candidates, MP Salem Al-Issawi from the Sovereignty Party, and Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, who is supported by the Progress Party.
On November 21, 2023, the Federal Court decided to officially terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, and First Deputy Mohsen al-Mandalawi became the Speaker of the Council. He announced several times that a date had been set for a session to elect a new speaker, but all the sessions that were held did not lead to the election of a replacement due to disagreements over the position between the two Sunni poles, the Progress Party led by Mohammed al-Halbousi, and the Sovereignty Alliance led by Khamis al-Khanjar.
