[rtl]* Upon completion of the ten power transmission substations, the Iraqi electricity grid will be able to transmit an additional 2,200 MVA of electricity, which will enable improved transmission for approximately 300,000 homes or approximately one million people in Iraq.[/rtl]
[rtl]Baghdad, Iraq, November 1, 2024 – The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and GE Vernova today announced the early completion of a project to build and operate five vital substations across the country in less than two years. These stations are part of the Ministry of Electricity’s strategy to build and operate 10 substations that will deliver high capacities and availability to the power transmission sector in cooperation with GE Vernova to improve the stability and efficiency of high and ultra-high voltage networks, in addition to supporting the electrical interconnection efforts with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.[/rtl]
[rtl]The new 132kV substations include Hindiyah, Sadr, Qaim Saada, North Baqubah and South Yarimjah, all of which were delivered ahead of schedule, while North Baqubah and South Yarimjah were delivered approximately six months ahead of schedule, with the former completed in August and the latter in September 2024. Construction and equipment installation at the Rusafa Central Transformer Station are in the final stages and will be operational soon. Four additional substations, North Najaf, North Karbala, North Diwaniyah and Oreido, are scheduled to be completed and operational before summer 2025.[/rtl]
[rtl]When the 10 above-mentioned stations are completed, the Iraqi electricity grid will be able to transmit an additional 2,200 MVA of power, which will improve transmission for approximately 300,000 homes or about one million people.[/rtl]
[rtl]Over the past decade, GE Vernova has built and operated 30 substations across Iraq, including five 400 kV ultra-high voltage substations in Khairat, Nineveh, Mansouriya, East Mosul, Al-Faw, and northwest Baghdad.[/rtl]
[rtl]Within the framework of the solid and approved work with the global specifications of GE Company, four secondary stations with a voltage of 132 kilovolts were completed in Duhok Governorate for the benefit of the Kurdistan Region, which will contribute to strengthening the electrical infrastructure in Iraq.[/rtl]
[rtl]“The strategic partnership with reputable companies, including General Electric Vernova, supports the Ministry’s efforts to modernize the national electricity grid by enhancing generation and transmission efficiency and drawing up a reliable technical map that provides flexibility and maneuverability in transferring loads and achieving stability in connecting governorates to each other,” said Eng. Ziad Ali Fadel, Minister of Electricity. “In this context, these five transformer stations, which were completed and operated ahead of schedule, represent an important addition to our efforts as they directly contribute to improving the stability of the grid in the surrounding areas, and are essential to meet the growing demand for electricity,” he stressed, stressing that “the completion of these complex projects ahead of schedule reflects the commitment of the Ministry of Electricity teams and their focus on achieving tangible results.”[/rtl]
[rtl]“By implementing these strategic electricity projects in collaboration with the Ministry, our advanced solutions for the installed stations not only contribute to the stability of the grid, but also accelerate Iraq’s transition to a more efficient and sustainable future,” said Johan Bendel, President of Grid Systems Integration at GE Vernova.[/rtl]
[rtl]“As a committed and long-term partner in Iraq’s energy sector, we are determined to meet the growing energy needs of the Iraqi economy through the latest technologies and solutions in various aspects of power generation and transmission,” said Rashid Janabi, President of GE Vernova in Iraq. “This new achievement represents an important step in the process of modernizing the national electricity grid, which is an important part of a comprehensive strategy developed by the company to support Iraq’s energy transformation and provide more electricity while reducing carbon intensity. We are proud of the pivotal role played by Iraqi cadres from the Ministry of Electricity and GE Vernova in these projects.”[/rtl]
[rtl]In addition to modernizing the national electricity grid, GE Vernova has added 19,000 megawatts of generating capacity over the past decade, and has facilitated Iraq’s access to more than $3 billion in financing to support energy projects since 2015. The company continues to invest in training national cadres, building local capabilities, and establishing advanced control centers according to updated international specifications that can diagnose and sense symptoms on generating units before they occur to protect the national system.[/rtl]
