[ltr]A US Air Force C-130 cargo plane crashed in the Savannah state of Georgia on Saturday, causing debris to be scattered on a highway and a railway line, and all nine people on board were likely to be killed, officials said.[/ltr]
[ltr]A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said five people had been confirmed dead, adding the death toll could rise.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Hercules transport plane crashed at around 11:30 am (1530 GMT) shortly after taking off from Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport, 280 kilometers southeast of Atlanta, officials said.[/ltr]
[ltr]Major Paul Dahlin, spokesman for the Puerto Rican National Guard, told reporters at the Pentagon that the plane was on a training mission. He said she was heading to Arizona and was due to leave the service after the flight.[/ltr]
[ltr]Dahlin declined to say if all nine people aboard had died, but acknowledged that the pictures taken were "talking about themselves."[/ltr]
[ltr]The aircraft was carrying a crew of five and four passengers, military operations and maintenance personnel, all of whom were from the Puerto Rico National Air Guard.[/ltr]
[ltr]Air Force spokesman Sergeant Roger Parsons told a news conference an investigation into the cause of the crash was under way.[/ltr]
[ltr]The incident was the fifth in a US military aircraft since early April and the first for a C-130 aircraft since July when 16 US military personnel were killed in a crash in Mississippi.[/ltr]
