JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli entity acknowledged on Thursday that the Syrian civil war had virtually ended and predicted the Golan Heights would become calmer with the return of central rule to Damascus in the region.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's crushing of opposition fighters in the southwest has raised concern over Israel, which dropped a Syrian warplane last week, saying it had entered a buffer zone in the Golan Heights and warned Iranian troops supporting Assad to deploy troops in the area.

But Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman appeared more optimistic on Thursday during a tour of anti-aircraft missile batteries.

"From our perspective, the situation goes back to what it was before the civil war, which means that there is someone to address, a responsible person and a central government," Lieberman told reporters.

When asked whether the Israelis would be concerned about the possible escalation of the situation in the Golan, he replied: "I think so. I think that is what Assad wants as well. "

In order to achieve calm, Lieberman said Syria must abide by the UN-brokered 1974 truce that established a demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights.

He reiterated Israel's demand that Iran not establish military bases in Syria and not use Syria to smuggle arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"We do not seek friction, but we will know how to respond to any provocations and any challenges," he said.
