President Donald Trump is considering keeping about 200 troops in eastern Syria, so that the oil fields do not fall into the hands of the Assad regime and Russia, the New York Times reported.
The newspaper quoted an unnamed senior official that "Trump will accept a plan for the Department of Defense (the Pentagon) to keep about 200 soldiers in eastern Syria."
"The plan is based on two reasons: the fight against ISIS and the prevention of oil areas in the hands of the regime and Russia," the official said.
If Trump endorses the latest resolution, it will be the second time he has reversed his decision to withdraw US troops from Syria.
In December, Trump announced an immediate withdrawal of nearly 2,000 troops from Syria, but reversed his decision and shortly announced that he had ordered a phased withdrawal.
Two weeks ago, Trump announced that his country would withdraw its troops from northern Syria, which number about 1000 soldiers, while Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that "the withdrawn soldiers will be transferred to western Iraq."
The United States has about 125 troops in Syria's al-Tanf area on the border with Iraq and Jordan.
