[size=30]The underdevelopment of agricultural mechanisms in Iraq led to the loss of 4 million tons of potential production of wheat.. A dunam gives less than the imposed production by 65%

    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

Despite the extent of the damage caused by the scarcity of water and rain to wheat production in Iraq, another factor shows greater damage to the wheat crop in Iraq, which led to Iraq losing about 65% of the potential production of wheat, due to old and backward mechanisms in agriculture, which led to Iraq getting On low production compared to what he cultivates from an area estimated at millions of hectares.
And Iraq harvested 4.2 million tons of wheat despite the fact that the cultivated area amounted to 9.4 million dunams, and while the global rate of wheat production per acre is 1200 kg per acre, in Iraq the production of one acre was only 447 kg, for many reasons, which makes Iraq lost 63 % of the real production that Iraq should achieve, and it produced only 37%.
The head of the Iraq Future Foundation for Studies, Manar Al-Obaidi, says that "the total production of wheat for the various Iraqi governorates for the year 2021 amounted to 4.2 million tons, planted on an area of 9.4 million acres."
He added that "the area of the harvested lands amounted to 6.3 million dunums, bringing the total area of the affected lands to 3 million dunums, most of them in the Mosul Governorate, where the size of the affected lands reached 2.7 million dunams out of 3.6 million cultivated dunams."
According to Al-Obaidi, "the production rate per acre has reached about 447 kg per acre, which is considered very low if it is known that the global production rate per acre is 1200 kg per acre."
He explained that "this decline in the productivity of the cultivated lands is due to the poor seeds used in agriculture, the failure to use modern irrigation methods with specific schedules, and the use of the correct pesticides, which would increase production," noting that "many of the cultivated lands were damaged, which led to a decline in the productivity of one acre, as The productivity in Mosul governorate was only 106 kg per acre.”
He stressed that "if the investment was done correctly in the cultivation of wheat and the production rate reached 800 kg per dunum, Iraq would have been able to achieve 8 million tons annually, which is equivalent to double the current production."
He explained, "Likewise, if the vast lands located in various parts of Iraq, especially in Anbar Governorate, whose cultivated land area did not exceed the 300,000 dunums barrier, were exploited, and modern methods of irrigation and land reclamation were used, production would exceed the barrier of 15 million tons annually."
Iraq's need of wheat is about 5 million tons annually, with an annual increase as a result of the high rate of population growth in Iraq.
Iraq suffers from the misuse of its water resources, which were greatly damaged in previous years by reducing water quotas, as well as the absence of a clear strategy for the development of agriculture in Iraq, which leads to providing food security that makes Iraq away from importing wheat from other countries
In order to develop agricultural investment projects, the state should launch an initiative to support agricultural projects by working on land reclamation and encouraging young people to invest in this vital sector, which is of great importance to the Iraqi citizen in terms of food security as well as providing job opportunities.
