Yesterday, Sunday, the Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Jabr Al-Alaywi, announced the launch of a project to increase the cultivated areas in the country, while referring to an address to Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani to reactivate the agricultural initiative.
Al-Olayawi said, in a statement carried by the official news agency and followed by Al-Mada, that "the ministry has completed all the requirements to announce the opportunity for a project to purchase modern technologies from irrigation systems with a capacity of 120, 180 and 60 dunums, and the announcement will begin in the next few days." Al-Alaywi added, "The ministry launched a project to increase the cultivated areas of palm trees, trees, olives, and citrus fruits, to increase the areas in Baghdad, the provinces, and sectoral institutions." He pointed out that “the amounts of rain that fell recently in the country, especially in the southern regions, had a major role in increasing the cultivated area,” pointing to “increasing the percentage of the cultivated area to one million dunums, bringing the total number to two and a half million dunums for agriculture irrigated by rivers.”
While Al-Alaywi explained, "Increasing the financial allocations to the ministry will give preference to the success of the upcoming agricultural seasons," revealing that "a letter was directed to the Prime Minister to reactivate the agricultural initiative because of its great impact on the success of the agricultural sector in the country." Al-Alaywi went on to say, "The ministry seeks to make Iraq one of the countries exporting agricultural crops, especially with the quadruple and tripartite agreement, which emphasized the export of agricultural quantities in excess of the local market's need to the countries included in the agreement." In addition, a statement issued by the ministry, received by (Al-Mada), stated that “Al-Aliawi chaired the fourteenth session of the opinion committee, in order to discuss issues related to the agricultural plan for the current winter season and take appropriate decisions for it in order to develop the agricultural sector and increase national production.”
Al-Olayawi stressed, according to the statement, “the importance of the ministry continuing to provide full support to farmers and farmers, addressing obstacles and developing appropriate solutions for them in a way that leads to the implementation of the agricultural plan for the 2022-2023 season, ensuring its success and securing sustainable food security in support of the national economy.”
The statement indicated that “the opinion committee discussed a number of important issues, and took appropriate decisions regarding them.” He pointed out, "The approval of supplying subsidized urea fertilizer at a price of 330,000 dinars per ton is part of the ministry's plan to support the winter planting plan for the 2022-2023 agricultural season." The statement noted, “The extension of the date for processing al-Dab fertilizer until the 15th of next January, for the central and southern governorates, and until the 31st of the same month for the western and northern governorates, except for the Kurdistan region.” And he stressed, “Voting to continue working to include expired agricultural land contracts (not renewed) according to Law No. 35 of 1983 in Diyala Governorate in the agricultural plan 2022-2023.” The statement spoke of "approval of the decision to transfer the seeds of higher grades of the wheat crop between the governorates, which falls within the procedures of the two companies (Mesopotamia General for Seeds and the Iraqi Company for Seed Production), provided that the transfer of wheat grains takes place according to the mechanism of the Ministry of Commerce."
And the statement concluded, “The opinion committee voted to direct departments and companies to present an integrated vision for agricultural stations and sites, to indicate the possibility of presenting them as investment opportunities or restarting them, and including their financial allocations within the 2023 budget.”
