The seismic activities taking place in the region have angered many citizens and those concerned with the economic affairs, and questions are being raised about the extent to which buildings in Iraq resist any expected seismic activity, and here came the specialists’ answer that it is necessary to form a team specialized in examining buildings that indicates their ability to withstand any seismic emergency.
The expert on international investment, Khaled Al-Jabri, demanded the formation of specialized teams to follow up the reality of buildings in Iraqi cities, which were built according to different building codes, in anticipation of avoiding the risks that urban residents may be exposed to as a result of the seismic activities taking place in the region, whose effects are increasing in the country.
He stressed the importance of cooperation between the proposed teams and the Municipality of Baghdad to classify buildings, determine their tolerance for any seismic activity, and inform their residents, so that they are on the alert and leave homes at the time of danger quickly.
He pointed out that this process today is no longer an option, but rather an obligation to protect citizens from a real and continuous danger to which areas neighboring Iraq are exposed, which requires us to go to the census of buildings and their ages, especially since some areas contain old buildings and are more vulnerable to the risk of earthquakes.
Al-Jabri stressed the need to check the specifications and plans of residential projects under construction and determine the extent of their sobriety and resistance to any seismic emergency, and that the buildings be examined and their strengths and weaknesses be known to know the extent of their sobriety.
He pointed to the possibility of addressing buildings that prove a defect in some of their joints, and as for those that cannot be treated, they must be demolished and rebuilt according to international quality specifications, pointing out that the country needs a large number of projects in all regions of Iraq, which necessitates the concerned authorities Work towards the consolidation of building mechanisms by adopting international specifications that resist all challenges.
It is noteworthy that the Minister of Construction and Housing, Benkin Rikani, responded to the demands of the private sector by providing an opportunity for national competencies by activating the role of non-governmental consulting engineering offices, which represent the private sector registered under Law No. 16 of 2000.
And Al-Jabri indicated "the possibility of implementing new design projects through investment, except for infrastructure projects," noting that "the city of Baghdad is a durable city, and this is what distinguishes it from others, but it has suffered neglect for a long time, and according to the plans, the city of Baghdad must be expanded in four directions, east towards the Diyala River and towards The south towards the city of Hilla and west of Baghdad towards the agricultural areas in Abu Ghraib and the Akkarof region and to the north after the city of Husseiniya, but this suffers from the fact that the plan is different from the current reality.
He stressed, "The inevitability of inviting local consulting offices that have partnerships with international offices to develop new designs for the city within a year and a half, and we have the expertise that can implement the best designs that rise to the world."
