Shafaq News/ The Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, described, on Tuesday, the war waged by the Iraqi authorities against narcotics and psychotropic substances as "complicated", stressing at the same time the lack of complacency in confronting this scourge that threatens societies and countries.
Al-Sudani said in a speech he delivered during the first Baghdad International Conference on Drug Control, that the drug issue is now threatening societies, and its danger threatens state entities, adding: We are facing a complex war, in which the enemy infiltrates to kill our children, destroy our families, and dismantle our social fabric.

Harb considered the war of the concerned authorities with drugs as "no less ferocious and dangerous than our war in which we won against terrorism," praising "the society's arming with authentic values, and its adoption of rejecting these poisons that destroy the present and the future, and this is a position we are proud of as Iraqis."
Al-Sudani also stressed that he did not and will not tolerate drugs, neither on the legal level nor on the social level, stressing that the security forces deal with drug trafficking and transportation and everyone involved in it, as a security and terrorist threat.
He noted the establishment of private sanatoriums to treat victims of addiction and drugs, including medical, psychological and social support for them, stressing that Iraq enacted the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017, and it was a quantum leap in terms of setting goals, mechanisms and penalties.
He added that the Supreme National Commission for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Affairs and the Directorate for Narcotics Affairs in the Ministry of the Interior were formed, in cooperation with the Ministries of Labor and Health.
Al-Sudani stated that Baghdad embraces its Arab brothers to unite efforts in confronting the drug pandemic and to search for available statistics and information about it.
And he went on to say: We devoted efforts under a national strategy to combat drugs, for the years 2023-2025, as part of an expanded plan towards a drug-free Iraq.
The Prime Minister promised the role of the media and societal awareness "whatever", as well as the contributions of religious, cultural and educational institutions, to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs, pointing out that we will spare no effort to combat drugs, whether at the legislative or field level, or to prepare trained and professional cadres and elements to address them.
He continued by saying that terrorism relies in a corner of its financing on drugs, and its circulation thrives in light of terrorism, and drugs and terrorism are two sides of the same crime.
Al-Sudani concluded his speech by saying: We are facing drugs at the internal level, and the need for international and regional cooperation through the exchange of information and coordination to uncover their networks.
The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, is witnessing the first international conference on drug control, in which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Syrian Arab Republic participate.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, the Lebanese Republic, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
And the State of Kuwait, and the Republic of Turkey) in addition to Iraq, the host country, as well as the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, the Arab Office for Drug and Crime Affairs, Naif University for Security and Military Sciences and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
