Basra Gas: Targeting 92% of three fields by 2028

expected that the Basra Gas Company expected to target 92% of the quantities of gas present in three oil fields by 2028. The
deputy director of the company, Mirfa Kadhim Al-Asadi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The company is interested in investing in the first licensing round, which included three fields.” Only those are North Rumaila, South Rumaila, Qurna 1, and Al Zubair,” noting that “over the past ten years, the company has modernized the factories and pressing stations and doubled the company’s capacity by approximately 3.5-4 times, as it started with 280 million bags, reaching today one thousand million bags per day.”
Al-Asadi added, “The company is working according to a five-year plan that is updated annually based on data from the availability of gas quantities, the possibilities of implementing and continuing projects, and providing financial support through its sales that enable it to implement these projects,” indicating that “the 2023 plan, which extends for the next five years, looks forward to investing what “Approximately 92% of the gas produced from the three fields will be compared to today’s oil production by the year 2028.”
He explained that “the latest plan was approved by the partners since the company is a mixed sector, as it is owned by the South Gas Company by 51%, Shell by 44%, and Mitsubishi by 5%,” pointing out that “the increase in capacities comes through projects to gather and capture gas in the gas field.” Al-Zubair and West Qurna, and after completing the operation of the Basra Laboratory (NGL) for liquefying liquid gas, which was established, the inauguration activities and initial operation of the first phase will begin during the coming weeks of this year with a capacity of 200 million mqm, while the second phase will begin at the beginning of next year, so that the company’s capacity will be around 1,500 million mqm. Al-Asadi stressed that “the plan supports the collection of gas and its conversion into clean energy and the production of electrical energy, adding approximately one-third of the country’s dry gas production to the national grid, and the new plants and increases will add quantities of gas that can increase electrical energy production by approximately 1,000 megawatts,” pointing out that “The increase will help produce liquefied cooking gas (LBG), which the company supplies 80% of the country’s need, while the surplus is collected in tanks in Umm Qasr for export through the Basra Gas Company port located at our location there.”
