Baghdad/Al-Masala: In a sudden political shift, members of the Iraqi parliament chose Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani as the new speaker of the council after two years of this position being vacant.
Al-Mashhadani won this position at the expense of three other candidates: Salem Al-Issawi, Talal Al-Zubaie, and Amer Abdul-Jabbar.
Amidst the tense atmosphere, analyses indicated that the support of the State of Law coalition led by Nouri al-Maliki played a prominent role in tipping the balance in favor of al-Mashhadani.
In the same context, it seemed that former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi had mobilized strongly in his favor, which led some to believe that al-Halbousi sees al-Mashhadani’s victory as a victory that would consolidate his position as a representative of the Sunni majority, which would enhance his influence and make him confront his political opponents with greater confidence.
On the other hand, there was a difference in the opinions of the Sunni representatives; some voices supported the nomination of Salem Al-Issawi, but the surprise came when this bloc sided at the last moment to vote in favor of Al-Mashhadani, amid whispers that the decision came in response to political pressures and self-serving alliances.
Meanwhile, Shiite parties expressed their hope that Al-Mashhadani would invest his previous experience and positive relationships to unify the ranks in Parliament and work to pass the laws that have been stuck in the Council’s drawers for several years.
The Parliament faces a serious test of its ability to overcome political differences and unify the national will.
In this climate, the Shiite “Coordination Framework” coalition dominates the House of Representatives, which includes 329 deputies, but the political differences within the coalition itself raise questions about the extent of its cohesion and the continuation of mutual support. Opinions have indicated that the current alliances may witness divisions at any moment due to conflicting interests, especially in light of the growing economic and social crises that push everyone towards different political positions.
It is clear that the Iraqi parliament, under its new leadership, is facing a critical stage, as all eyes are on Al-Mashhadani’s ability to manage the council and achieve consensus among the various parties.
