    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

The official border crossings, especially the Shalamcheh crossing, are still closed to the movement of goods that are included in the agricultural calendar, despite the passage of several days since the cabinet’s decision to open imports for all materials prohibited from importing for a period of 3 months, in order to control the high prices.
As a result of this, “angry” parliamentary and popular movements emerged threatening to open the ports “by force,” especially the Shalamcheh port, at a time when the ports waited only for the entry of these goods in accordance with the “controls” by submitting traders to import licenses, at a time when traders were trying Entering goods and merchandise without licenses, randomly and directly through the ports.
The Border Ports Authority said that the reason for the delay in imported foodstuffs and agricultural crops is due to the inability of importers to obtain official approvals yet.
    Representatives threaten with force
Representatives from Basra Governorate, in the far south of Iraq, had sent an official letter to the federal government, calling for the speedy opening of the southern outlets to enter foodstuffs without setting limitations and impossible conditions by the Minister of Agriculture in the caretaker government.
The deputies said, "The last date will be until next Saturday to open the Shalamcheh port for the entry of goods and foodstuffs. Otherwise, it will be opened against their will, and we will not allow the south to starve."

Ports are waiting for import licenses
In response to those deputies, the commission said in a statement today that it would like “to show the public opinion that it operates 24 hours a day at all border crossings, including Shalamcheh border crossing, adding that there is no truth to the news of the closure of the port and the movement of trade exchange continues.”
With regard to the increase in prices, the authority said in its statement that the federal government had initiated the issuance of Cabinet Resolution No. 72 for the year 2022, which stipulated the zeroing of customs and tax fees for many foodstuffs, agricultural and other items.
With regard to the delay in the entry of imported goods, the authority stated that because importers could not obtain approvals from sectoral ministries according to their jurisdiction, and after communicating with the Ministry of Agriculture, it clarified that it had opened the door for granting import licenses to many agricultural crops due to the decrease in their local production during the current period.
She concluded her statement by saying that the border crossings are a monitoring body and have nothing to do with granting approvals for the entry of foodstuffs or agricultural crops.

    Agriculture is waiting for traders
The Ministry of Agriculture called on merchants to review the ministry to obtain approvals to import tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers and potatoes.
The Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad al-Khafaji, said, “We call on all the country’s merchants, especially the provinces that have border outlets” Basra, Maysan, Wasit,” to review the ministry, starting Thursday, to obtain approvals to import crops “tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and cucumbers.”

An incident similar to September 2021
In September of last year, dozens of trucks coming from the Iranian side were parked at the Shalamcheh port because they did not have import licenses. However, chaos and complaints emerged from the media that “forced” the government to open the doors of Shalamcheh for these trucks, despite their lack of import licenses.
