The Iraqis are also awaiting these discussions to secure Iraq’s water share from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which originate in Turkey.

Although Iraq has repeatedly negotiated with Turkey, Turkey has explicitly declared that the water card it holds is pressure in exchange for obtaining Iraqi oil.
The Iraqis see Turkey's need for a development path as a golden opportunity for Iraq to place the water card in exchange for the development project that Turkey seeks to confirm through the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq in the coming days.
Indeed, the Iraqi government has prepared for these discussions and has placed the issue of Iraq's water share at the top of its discussions with the Turkish side, which seems to be complying with Iraq's desire on this issue.
Today, Friday, the Minister of Water Resources, Atoun Dhiab, confirmed that Iraq is seeking to reach a clear agreement with Turkey regarding Iraq’s water share.
Diab said in a statement from the ministry, received by Al-Maalomah, that “Al-Arad is preparing a draft memorandum of understanding with Turkey regarding the water file to be signed during President Erdogan’s visit,” noting that he “informed Iran of the necessity of coordination regarding the rivers that feed the Tigris.”
He called on "Iran to open the waters of the Karun River to improve the conditions of the Shatt al-Arab."
He pointed out that the visit to Syria "was successful and we reached an agreement to release water from the Tabqa Dam to the Euphrates River, stressing that there is no water war, but there are disputes and disagreements."
Turkish and Iraqi officials held consultations on security and water issues during a visit by a high-level Turkish delegation, which included the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense, according to what Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced.
The two sides discussed an upcoming visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq in the coming days.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yaşar Guler, and Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin held a security meeting with their Iraqi counterparts in Baghdad.
Fouad Hussein said in a post on the X website, “In a fruitful meeting in Baghdad... we discussed a wide range of bilateral and regional issues, and the upcoming visit of President Erdogan.”
He added, "We stressed the need to strengthen cooperation in the fields of security, trade, energy, water, education, and everything that is in the interest of our two countries." Relations between Ankara and Baghdad have witnessed tension in recent years against the backdrop of several files, especially water, energy, and Turkish military operations in northern Iraq.
