BAGHDAD - The western regions of Iraq are witnessing a three-pronged intelligence race involving the deployment of armed factions loyal to Iran, including missiles at various levels, in the context of developments in the confrontation with the United States.
Local sources in Anbar province, west of the country, which is bordering Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, reported intensive movements of elements in armed factions in the vicinity of camps belonging to the Iraqi popular crowd in the Qaim area, near the Iraqi-Syrian border.
Despite considerable logistical difficulties, the popular crowd has maintained positions near the Iraqi-Syrian border for about two years, despite repeated announcements of its withdrawal from there.
The Shiite forces of the popular crowd are crossing vast distances to reach their positions in western Anbar from their nearest gathering point in Baghdad and penetrate a desert environment, one of the most important Sunni strongholds in Iraq.
According to experts in the field of military strategies, the popular mobilization sites in the western Anbar regions ensured full territorial connectivity between the Iraqi border with Iran to the east and the Iraqi border with Syria to the west, with armed factions able to move freely on the roads linking the two sides.
The sources told the "Arabs" that "Iraqi armed factions, competing with the Iraqi army and US forces, in a missile deployment in the areas of western Iraq, some of them reach targets within Israel."
The sources added that "the Iraqi armed factions, did not reveal explicit intentions to deploy these missiles, but the intelligence of the Iraqi army and US forces, have indicators to support this trend."
"Local authorities are concerned about the development of the missile race between some militias and US forces in the western regions," a senior official in the local Anbar government told the Arabs, asking not to be named for the sensitivity of his information.
He added that "the problem is not related to missiles that threaten Israel, but also border areas of Saudi Arabia, as some of the Iraqi armed factions, sites facilitate the bombing of these areas with rockets."
"The US military may consider that its positions in Anbar would be a preferred target for the pro-Tehran militia militias in the event of an armed conflict between the United States and Iran," he said.
Saddam Hussein's Iraqi army used the vast Anbar desert overlooking Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to hide ballistic missile platforms, attacking Israel during the Second Gulf War in the early 1990s.
Despite the enormous air superiority of the United States and its allies in that war, but the Iraqi missile pads all survived at the time after the implementation of 24 rocket attacks, some of which targeted locations in central Tel Aviv.
According to intelligence sources in Baghdad that Iraqi armed factions used military specialists who had served in the former Iraqi army during the second Gulf war to develop means of concealment in order to ensure the confidentiality of the movement of ballistic missile platforms, came from Iran.
The sources added that signals from some armed factions may suggest that they moved some of these mobile platforms to the western desert of Anbar after the escalation of the crisis between the United States and Iran.
A source in the Iraqi Defense Ministry refused to confirm this information, stressing that "the situation in the western areas under total control and no fears of military developments."
"The military presence of the popular crowd in the western parts of Anbar is very limited, and is directed to a specific mission on the other hand, securing a small part of the Iraqi-Syrian border, as well as being under the control of the operations command run by the Iraqi army," the source said.
