The government is preparing to hold provincial council elections in less than a month, amid expectations of strong participation, despite the Sadrist movement’s announcement of its boycott, while the High Electoral Commission has completed its preparations and there are no obstacles except amending its law, which will be voted on during today’s session.
Member of the House of Representatives, Jassim Al-Alawi, told “Al-Sabah”: During today’s session, a vote will be taken on amending the Commission Law in order to extend the work of the Board of Commissioners for six months, indicating that during this period, voting procedures for the provincial council elections and the processes that precede the vote will be completed, as there are We are very keen to pass the law before the elections and before Parliament takes its legislative recess.
He pointed out that there is interest, follow-up and consensus among the political forces regarding passing these elections due to their importance at this stage, pointing out that all preparations have been completed and there are no justifications for postponing the elections, stressing the presence of strong participation, especially from young candidates.
Regarding the legality of holding the session, a member of the Legal Committee in the House of Representatives, Muhammad Jassim Al-Khafaji, explained to “Al-Sabah” that all the sessions held by Parliament during its legislative recess are constitutional, including today’s session because they were held following a request submitted by the representatives, indicating that there is no truth to the claim. That the sessions are illegal or unconstitutional because they are exceptional sessions.
Al-Khafaji said: The constitution enacted in 2005 in accordance with Article 58 stipulates that the special session is held at the request of the Speaker of the Council or the President of the Republic or at a request submitted by 50 deputies, and it exclusively discusses the topic for which the request was submitted, indicating that the sessions that were held were at a request signed by 50 deputies.
