    Baghdad - Nas
Kuwaiti diplomatic sources revealed to the London-based Al-Arab newspaper that two goals are at the top of Kuwait's foreign agenda in the coming period, namely the demarcation of the maritime borders with Iraq and the completion of the continental shelf with Iran, noting that the achievement of these two goals is sufficient to achieve a leap in Kuwait's relations with the two countries.

The sources confirmed to the newspaper, followed by “Nass”, (February 10, 2023), that work is underway to close all outstanding files between Kuwait and Iraq, especially the demarcation of the maritime borders, and indicated that this file receives high-level attention, and advances the external files that Kuwaiti diplomacy is working on, noting. This was confirmed by Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah during the “Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership” that was held in Jordan last December.

Sources mentioned, in statements reported by Al-Rai newspaper, the success of Kuwaiti diplomacy in including a special item for Kuwait in the final statement of the Gulf-Chinese summit held in Riyadh about two months ago. Also to complete the demarcation of the maritime border with Kuwait.

The sources pointed out that the Chinese position carries very important connotations, as it, in addition to emphasizing Kuwait's right and position, constitutes a public and clear message from a superpower, indicating that the inclusion of a special clause in the final statement of the summit on this issue represents a pledge to follow it up, and an obligation for Iraq to implement it.

The sources indicated that the Kuwaiti diplomacy, which has made great efforts in this regard, now has an additional card on the negotiating table in this regard, in favor of Kuwait, whether at the bilateral level or at the international level.

Last year, Iraq and Kuwait turned the page on compensation for the invasion of Kuwait by the late President Saddam Hussein's regime in 1990, but an obstacle remained to strengthening bilateral relations, which were resumed in 2003, which is the disputes over the maritime borders between them. The area after the marine mark 162 is a major point of contention between the two countries, especially with the public dispute over the “Fisht Al-Aij” area.

And the Kuwaiti Prime Minister had previously referred to Mark 162, which means the last mark drawn by the UN Security Council in accordance with Resolution 833 on the twenty-seventh of May 1993, and it is located in the middle of Khor Abdullah.

In 2019, Iraq addressed an official complaint to the United Nations objecting to Kuwait's establishment of a naval platform in Fisht Al-Aij, which is an area of land located after point 162. On the other hand, Kuwait adhered to its right to the region, and that it falls within its sovereignty.

Observers believe that each party's adherence to its position will make it very difficult to resolve this border dispute, noting that some regional powers such as Iran will be keen to keep this dispute open, to blackmail Kuwait, especially in the file of the continental shelf.
