Legal Movement member Ahmed Shaheed Al-Shammari ruled out, on Wednesday, amending the Iraqi constitution due to the Kurds’ objection, noting that the current constitution contains many mines.
Al-Shammari said in an interview with Al-Maalouma Agency, "The objection of three governorates to amending the constitution according to the law will make the amendment invalid."
He added, "The Iraqi constitution has bound itself to complex mechanisms that make amending it difficult, in addition to the lack of an agreement that satisfies all political parties."
He pointed out that "the constitution needs to be amended, especially after the major violations of its articles and their interpretation in a way other than the way for which they were enacted."
He added, "No real reforms can be achieved in the country unless the constitution is amended." End / 25 H
