Firas Turki, a member of the House of Representatives within the coordination framework, identified two paths to resolve the “crisis” of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Turki said, “The coordination framework is with the Sunni component emerging with one candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives,” expressing his regret for what happened during the previous session to elect the Speaker of Parliament.
He added, “The solution is in the hands of the Sunni component, by sitting at a dialogue table and nominating a figure agreed upon by all parties.”
The member of the House of Representatives pointed out, “The chaos that occurred during the last president’s selection session is unacceptable and represents an insult to the legislative authority.”
He pointed out, “The House of Representatives has two options, the first of which is to agree on one candidate, and the second is to complete the current session headed by the First Deputy (Acting Speaker of the House).”
The House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker last May, with none of the candidates receiving a majority of votes during a tense session.
This attempt is the latest in a series of unsuccessful attempts to compensate former Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi, who was dismissed last November, amid political wrangling and partisan divisions that led to the obstruction of the process.
The May vote is the closest yet to choosing a new speaker for the 329-member House of Representatives, with 311 representatives attending the session and the main candidate falling short of just seven votes to win the job.
The Council's media office announced that 137 deputies voted for Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, the oldest member, while 158 deputies chose Salem Al-Issawi.
But those votes remain incomplete, as the candidate needs at least 165 votes to win the presidency of the House of Representatives.
