    Economy News - Follow-up
The Ministry of Agriculture intends to announce 23 investment opportunities for local and foreign companies during the Iraq Investment Forum, which will be held on the second of next month, with an area of 186 thousand dunums, while it presented 64 other investment projects that have been suspended for many years.
The Assistant Director General of the Agricultural Investments Department at the Ministry, Dr. Hussein Ismail Hussein, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” followed by “Al-Eqtisad News”, that his department has prepared 23 agricultural investment opportunities in the country, which will be presented to Arab and foreign companies during the Iraq Investment Forum, which will be held on the second of next month, with a total area of 186,224 dunums.
He added that the projects were distributed as follows: eight in Dhi Qar Governorate, two opportunities in Diwaniyah, the same number in Babylon, three opportunities in Wasit, two in Nineveh, four in Diyala, one opportunity in Maysan Governorate, and the same in Basra, stressing that all of these opportunities are ready and have available natural resources and groundwater.
Hussein explained that agreements were concluded with Arab countries for the purpose of investment, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to desalinate groundwater wells in desert areas for wheat cultivation, in addition to an agreement with Japanese investment companies to install systems with high and modern technologies for desalinating salt water in wells for cultivating land, in addition to announcing the investment of water bodies for foreign companies and exploiting them for fish farming.
He stressed that his department has prepared a map that includes the investment opportunities nominated by the agricultural departments in the governorates except for the region, and has handed it over to the Studies Department to organize it and submit it to the Minister of Agriculture for approval. Accordingly, it will be presented to the National Investment Commission in order to announce it for investment, while providing all the necessary conditions for the projects, from human and natural resources according to the country’s needs, similar to the cultivation of wheat, barley, vegetables, poultry fields, cow stations, and calf fattening.
The Assistant Director General of the Agricultural Investments Department revealed the availability of 64 projects leased and sold to the private sector with different rates of completion, distributed between the central and southern governorates. These were considered major projects in the Middle East during the 1980s, but they were destroyed in recent years as a result of wars and terrorism.
In the same context, he pointed out that a plan has been prepared that includes recommendations to be presented to the Ministerial Council for the Economy, headed by the Deputy Minister of Planning and the Director General of the Investment Department, with the aim of returning it to production and presenting it for investment during the Iraq Investment Forum.
