Voting in the elections for the Parliament of the Federal Region of Southern Kurdistan ended today at 18:00 in all cities and regions of the region, and the preliminary results will be announced within 24 hours from Baghdad.
According to the High Electoral Commission, voting took place in 1,266 polling stations, distributed as follows: “498 stations in Erbil, 477 stations in Sulaymaniyah, 264 stations in Dohuk, and 27 stations in Halabja,” with a participation rate of 70%.
Some polling stations faced technical problems related to reading voters’ biometric data. This problem led to some voters not being able to cast their votes, which prompted the commission to take a decision to allow 5% of voters to vote manually, which is known as “override”, for those whose fingerprints were not read by the machines.
According to preliminary information, reported by Roj News Agency, from the Commission, the total number of votes counted so far in all four governorates for the elections has reached 854,372.
Kurdistan Democratic Party: 336,723
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan: 245,966
New Generation: 133,100
Kurdistan Islamic Union: 50,580
Kurdistan Justice Group: 32,452
Positions Party: 27,815
Popular Front: 16,601
Change Movement: 5,862
Babylon List: 3,841
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan media reported a short while ago that the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has managed, so far, to take first place in Halabja and Sulaymaniyah, and is in second place in Erbil.
The preliminary results of the elections will be announced within 24 hours, and the results will be available to all concerned parties, without any problems or obstacles, the commission said.
The head of the electoral administration, Judge Amer Al-Husseini, confirmed an hour ago that the initial announcement of the results of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections will be from Baghdad.
Al-Husseini said in a press statement, "The memory stick for the Kurdistan Region elections will be transported by plane to the capital, Baghdad."
The elections were not without attempts to manipulate the vote, as Roj News Agency revealed this afternoon pictures showing the involvement of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in electoral manipulation operations and its bringing of citizens from Turkey to southern Kurdistan.
Photos obtained by the agency show citizens holding Turkish passports heading to polling stations in the Soran district of Erbil province, where their names were included in the voting lists.
This raises serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process, amid accusations that the KDP is trying to strengthen its influence through illegal means.
