Planning: Census is a vital tool for guiding development projects and distributing investments

The Ministry of Planning stressed the importance of the general population census in providing accurate indicators that contribute to effectively directing development projects towards the most needy areas. Specialists also point out that the census will contribute to directing investments to sites that require urgent intervention for their development.
The general population and housing census is scheduled to be conducted in all Iraqi governorates on November 20 and 21.
In this context, the ministry’s spokesman, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, told Al-Sabah that “the population census will allow for drawing a comprehensive picture of the economic and developmental level in Iraq, through an integrated database that includes all the different development sectors through accurate data on individuals.”
Al-Hindawi added, “This data, which will be collected through a questionnaire that includes a large set of questions, will form a multi-sector statistical information base, which will contribute to directing government policies in a more accurate and better way.”
For her part, economic expert Dr. Ikram Abdel Aziz explained that "the population census will provide an accurate assessment of the economic situation, through a comprehensive survey of workers and the unemployed." She also pointed out that "the legal and official nature of this census will make its results accurate and reliable."
In a related context, the Dean of the College of Business Economics at Al-Nahrain University, Dr. Nagham Hussein, confirmed that “the population census will provide real indicators that contribute to the distribution of development projects in the medium and long term.”
She added, "These indicators will take into account population growth rates, which require prior preparation to meet the requirements of improving the living and social standards of citizens."
She added that "the census will provide a comprehensive database on the numbers of males and females and the age distribution, which will help determine the needs of different age groups, from children to the elderly." She also pointed out "the importance of the census as a basic tool used by countries to determine their human resources and the distribution of the population by gender, age and geography."
She pointed out that "the population census is a vital step to understanding the demographic composition of any country, especially those undergoing a reconstruction phase, such as Iraq."
