Shafaq News/ The Ministry of Construction and Housing pledged, on Monday, that it has developed a strategic plan that will contribute to reducing the housing gap in Iraq by half over the next five years.

The ministry's spokesman, Nabil Al-Saffar, told Shafaq News Agency, "We have developed a strategy that extends to the year 2030 to reduce the housing crisis, which includes the five residential cities that were announced earlier, in addition to other cities that will be announced later, which will lead to reducing the housing gap by 50%."

He pointed out that "the Ministry of Planning had previously announced that Iraq is suffering from a housing crisis and estimated the need for three million housing units," adding that "the construction of residential cities will continue for 15 years and is considered the radical solution to the housing crisis in Iraq, in addition to other government measures such as the development of Sadr City, which is the responsibility of the Baghdad Municipality, in addition to the loans granted by the Housing Fund to contribute in a simple way to solving the housing crisis."

Al-Saffar pointed out that "the population census that will be conducted this year will also help in determining the number of housing units occupied by citizens and the number of slums, which will provide a database that can be used to find solutions and formulate housing policies."

The financial advisor to the Prime Minister, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, had previously said that the accumulated housing deficit is estimated at about three million housing units.

It is noteworthy that Iraq suffers from a stifling housing crisis due to the increase in its population compared to the number of residential complexes, in addition to the inability of citizens with limited income to build their own housing unit due to the high cost of land and construction materials.
