    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]The number of closed metal smelting sites in the capital has risen to 150, after taking decisive measures to reduce environmental pollution that has affected citizens’ health.[/rtl]
[rtl]Member of the Parliamentary Health and Environment Committee, Basem Al-Gharabi, said: “Baghdad Governorate has taken serious steps to prevent metal smelting operations inside residential neighborhoods,” noting that “the decision came after the spread of sulfurous odors in various parts of the capital, and following strict government measures in this regard.”[/rtl]
[rtl]Al-Gharabi added: “Nearly 150 sites used for smelting operations, or what is called ‘cores’, within the neighborhoods have been closed and removed,” noting that there is “intensive coordination with the security leadership to control some sites where waste is burned and sanitary landfills are being carried out.”[/rtl]
[rtl]The member of the Parliamentary Health and Environment Committee stated that “the areas affected by this pollution are Nahrawan, Taji, Nabai, and Rashid Camp,” and stressed “the need to continue efforts to eliminate these phenomena that harm the environment and public health.”[/rtl]
[rtl]Al-Gharabi explained that "the concerned parties in the Ministries of Electricity and Oil will be hosted and addressed to develop the necessary solutions, whether temporary or permanent, to address these problems."[/rtl]
[rtl]He added that "the Health and Environment Committee will closely follow up on the issue to ensure that these measures are implemented effectively and quickly, in a way that protects citizens' health and preserves the environment." [/rtl]
[rtl]A few days ago, the Baghdad Operations Command announced the closure of 106 metal smelting sites (cores) east of the capital, due to the harm they cause to the health and safety of citizens and the environmental pollution resulting from the emission of odors and gases from them in those areas.[/rtl]
[rtl]The closure process came in implementation of the directives of the Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, due to the lack of proper approvals (its establishment randomly) and the harm it causes to the health and safety of citizens and environmental pollution as a result of the emission of odors and gases from it in those areas.[/rtl]
