The Ministry of Interior is moving towards reducing the categories covered by carrying weapons

As part of the national policy to restrict weapons to the state and limit the phenomenon of community armament, the Ministry of Interior is moving towards reducing the categories covered by carrying weapons, recording a 75 percent decrease in the number of (tribal benches) during 2024.
The Secretary of the Permanent National Committee for the Restriction and Regulation of Weapons in State Hands, Major General Mansour Ali Sultan, said in a statement to Al-Sabah: His ministry, within the objectives of the national policy for the restriction and regulation of weapons in state hands, which was launched at the beginning of this year, is currently working to reduce all exceptions granted for carrying weapons by identifying the categories covered by them.
He added that the project to restrict weapons to the state was in three stages. The first stage includes launching the application and purchasing medium weapons, while the second stage includes inspection and verification of citizens’ weapons possession licenses and will start at the beginning of 2025 and continue for two years. The third stage includes coding and tattooing weapons.
Sultan explained that the Iraqi law allowed the Minister of Interior to grant permission for a citizen to carry a weapon in the event that he was threatened, noting that the aim of this was to limit the manifestations of armament within society and cities that had spread during the past years and had negative numerical repercussions, including the rise of (tribal attacks) and those firing bullets on all occasions.
He stated that all these measures are to protect citizens, revealing that his ministry has recorded a significant decrease in the number of tribal attacks during the current year, by 75 percent, in addition to a decrease in the number of people firing bullets, whether on happy or sad occasions, which reached 70 percent, especially since there are strict measures taken by police stations, under the direction of the Minister of Interior, against any individual who fires bullets on occasions.
The Secretary of the National Committee called on citizens, in the same context, to quickly register their light weapons for the purpose of possession, especially since the period granted for registration will end by the end of this year, after which the Committee will take its measures against violators, including confiscating the unregistered weapon, arresting and imposing a criminal record on the head of the family, in addition to other legal consequences.
